I tried to interview George Bush for this book but I was informed that the former president is "out of the interview business."James Baker communicated to me through his public relations spokesperson,Margaret Tutwiler,that he has no comment for this book.Other former Reagan and Bush officials were more cooperative,although many would speak only if they were promised
that their names would not appear in print.The same was true in London,where some very senior former government officials, including a cabinet minister,did not wish to be quoted on the record.
In Rome,numerous extremely helpful sources in government and banking knew and at times personally experienced the story but preferred not to be named.I thank the dozens of sources in these
three countries ,named and unnamed,who believed enough in the importance of getting this story out
to cooperate with information,comments,and documents.
